One-Step Aircraft Metal Polishing: The Maverick + Striker Method

Achieving a mirror-like finish on aircraft brightwork doesn't have to mean hours of multi-step polishing. With the right product combination and technique, you can restore oxidized aluminum to showroom condition in a single pass. This guide walks you through the one-step method using Fly Shiny Maverick and Fly Shiny Striker.

Why One-Step Polishing Works for Aircraft

Traditional metal polishing requires multiple passes with different compounds—heavy cut, medium cut, then fine polish. The Maverick + Striker combination changes this by using Maverick's sprayable formula (with cleaners, fine abrasives, and protectants that extend polishing time) as a carrier for Striker's medium-grade cutting power.

The result? You get cutting action and final polish in one step, with protectants built right in.

Step-by-Step Process

Step 1: Surface Preparation

Clean the brightwork surface with Fly Shiny Quick Turn to remove dirt and debris. Then use Oil Delete to remove any oil or old metal polish residue. The surface should be completely clean and dry before polishing.

Step 2: Prime Your Pad

Spray 3-4 pumps of Maverick directly onto your microfiber cutting pad. This primes the pad and provides the base lubrication for the polish to work effectively.

Step 3: Add Striker

Apply 4 pea-sized drops of Striker directly onto the primed pad. The combination of Maverick's extended work time and Striker's cutting compounds creates the one-step magic.

Step 4: Polish the Surface

Work in 2x2 foot sections using medium pressure and speed setting 3-4 on your DA polisher. Keep the pad flat against the surface and use slow, overlapping passes. You'll see the oxidation lift as you work.

Step 5: Blow Out and Repeat

After each section, use your Ultra Air Blaster to clean polish residue from the pad. Re-apply Maverick (2 sprays) and Striker (2-3 drops) for each new section.

Step 6: Final Buff

Wipe the polished surface with a clean microfiber towel to remove any remaining residue and reveal the mirror finish. Maverick has protectants built in, so no additional sealant is needed for basic protection.

Pro Tips for Best Results

  • Work in the shade or climate-controlled hangar when possible
  • Keep your pad clean—residue buildup reduces cutting power
  • For heavily oxidized surfaces, you may need 2-3 passes
  • Microfiber pads work best; avoid foam pads on aluminum as they fog the surface

Pro Tip: For severely neglected brightwork with heavy pitting or deep scratches, Fly Shiny Top Cut (heavy cut) is best used with a rotary buffer and wool pad before finishing with this one-step method.

When to Use Multi-Step Instead

While the one-step method works for most maintenance polishing, consider a multi-step approach for:

  • Bare aluminum that hasn't been polished in years
  • Deep scratches requiring heavy cut compounds (use Fly Shiny Top Cut with rotary buffer and wool pad)
  • Corrosion damage that needs aggressive correction

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use this method on spinner domes?
Yes! The Maverick + Striker combo works great on spinner domes, wing leading edges, and all polished aluminum surfaces.

How often should I polish aircraft brightwork?
For aircraft in regular service, quarterly polishing maintains optimal appearance. Aircraft in storage may need less frequent attention.

Do I need to apply a sealant after polishing?
Maverick has protectants built in, so basic protection is included. For additional long-term protection in harsh environments, you can add a dedicated metal sealant.
